Why should I care about my liver?

Because it is a vital organ. There is a long time between onset of liver damage and symptoms occurring. It is hard to know from symptoms the state of your liver health.

To assess for scarring of the liver (called fibrosis).

 

What will the liver scan tell me?

How bad the fibrosis is.
0 is none
1-2 is little
3 is moderate
4 is severe cirrhosis
It also tells us how much fat is in the liver (called steatosis).

Depending on the result, yes, in 2-5 years.

Depends on the results. The nurse will tell you on the day. If there is evidence of damage to the liver then yes, you would need to see a gastroenterologist.

 

How will this affect my diet and lifestyle?

Depending on the severity and cause of damage. You will usually be advised to:
1. decrease alcohol intake
2. decrease caloric intake
3. decrease ingestion of simple carbohydrates (sugar)
4. decrease fat
5. Exercise more often and regularly
6. to lose weight
